Free West Papua – Custom Salusalu (2025)
In Fijian, a salusalu is a hand-made garland of flowers, foliage, vau (hibiscus fibre) and sometimes barkcloth. When given and received to mark important events and achievements, salusalu are a means to fortify social bonds, cultivate connection and community.
This salusalu was made for West Papuan researcher, Veronika Triariyani Kanem upon completing her PhD at the University of Auckland – Waipapa Taumata Rau, on Noken / Men: String Bags of the Muyu Tribe of Southern West Papua. It was gifted to her at the opening of her exhibition produced with support from Lagi-Maama Academy & Consultancy, read more here.
