Salusalu

In Fijian, a salusalu is a hand-made garland of flowers, foliage, vau (hibiscus fibre) and sometimes barkcloth. When given and received to mark important events and achievements, salusalu are a means to fortify social bonds, cultivate connection and community.

These colourful salusalu made from synthetic felt and ric-rac trim are lovingly made by South Auckland-based Fijian visual artist, Vasemaca Tavola. Produced to honour the design of traditional natural fibre salusalu, Tavola’s contemporary interpretations are a re-usable and robust alternative, made in Aotearoa.

Whether given or received, hung on the wall, or around a special photograph, a salusalu reminds us of the value of being held in community.

Events

Adding a significant pop of colour, hand-made salusalu offer guests a thoughtful keepsake and make for great photos!

Salusalu represent a respectful nod to Indigenous Fijian and wider Moana Oceania / Pacific adornment practices, and the contemporary innovations that keep them alive and plastic-free here in Aotearoa.

Salusalu can be produced for events using either a custom colour palette or a multicoloured variety option. Orders must be placed with a minimum of two weeks advance notice and secured with a 50% deposit.

Salusalu commissioned by Tātaki Auckland Unlimited for the Auckland Pacific Economic Insights Series: Enabling a future ready workforce event, October 2024
